GSM Is Not a Quality Rating — What Fashion Founders Get Wrong About Fabric Weight


GSM comes up constantly in tech packs and factory conversations. And very often, it's being used wrong.


GSM stands for grams per square meter. It's a measurement of how much a fabric weighs. That's it. It tells you nothing about quality, durability, or how a garment will feel and perform.


The common mistake about GSM / fabric weight in fashion:


Fashion founders assume higher GSM or fabric weight means better fabric. So they specify 220gsm thinking it sounds more premium than 180gsm, or they ask their factory to match a competitor's weight without understanding what that actually means.


Here's the problem: 200gsm single jersey and 200gsm fleece are completely different fabrics. One is a summer t-shirt. The other is a winter hoodie. Same weight. Completely different product.


And a compact 180gsm ring-spun cotton will outperform a loosely knit 220gsm every time — better hand feel, holds its shape, doesn't go baggy after a few washes. The number didn't tell you any of that.



What actually matters when it comes to fabric:

 

If you're writing fabric specs for your tech pack, these are the things worth specifying:

 

Fiber — combed cotton vs. carded cotton affects hand feel and pilling more than any GSM number. Combed cotton removes short fibers before spinning, which gives you a smoother, softer result. Carded is less refined and pills faster.

 

Yarn count — finer yarn means a smoother surface. Coarser yarn gives you more texture but also more shrinkage. Worth knowing before you commit to a spec.

 

Knit structure — single jersey, pique, interlock, and fleece all behave differently at the same weight. If your tech pack just says "200gsm cotton" without specifying the structure, your factory is guessing.

 

Finish — pre-shrinking, bio-washing, and silicone softener change how a fabric feels and performs far more than a 20gsm difference ever will. These are worth specifying.


**Note the silicone softeners: they just coat the fibers for a smoother hand feel to make the product more appealing in stores. It is not permanent and will wash away, leaving your customer disappointed.

What to do if you're not sure:


If you know what you want the garment to feel like and what it needs to survive — washing, printing, stretch — tell your factory that. A good factory will recommend the right GSM and construction based on the end use. A bad one will just confirm whatever you wrote and let you find out later that it's wrong.

 

If you're working with a technical designer, this is exactly the kind of conversation worth having before your tech pack gets written. Getting fabric specs right the first time saves you from a very expensive lesson on your first sample round.
